Everything We Know About 'House of the Dragon': Release Date, Cast, and More

House of the Dragon is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on Sunday, August 21, 2022, just around three years after Game of Thrones wrapped up in 2019.

House of the Dragon is the prequel series we've all been waiting for to our semi-beloved HBO series, Game of Thrones (I'm looking at you, Season 8). It's based directly on George R. R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood, and focuses on House Targaryen and will chronicle the events leading up to and during the Targaryen Civil War, known as the "Dance of Dragons." This series is set 200 years prior to the events that we saw play out in Game of Thrones.

There are actually a shockingly enormous amount of spoilers about the series online, however, the ultimate spoiler of all would be George R. R. Martin's book, Fire & Blood, itself. The book details much of tells the story that's about to be told visually in House of the Dragon. So, if you're looking for some pure-hearted spoilers from the mouth of the creator himself, I'd suggest cracking open Fire & Blood.

Although no cast members from House Targaryen in Game of Thrones will be returning, their characters' ancestors will finally be making their first live appearances in House of the Dragon.

House of the Dragon will be premiering live on HBO on August 21, 2022, but will also be available to stream on HBO Max as soon as it's live on HBO.

In addition to the series itself, HBO is following suit (like many other of its series) by providing an official companion podcast to go along with the show, which you can stream on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and other streaming services right after each episode of the series. The podcast will be hosted by Jason Concepcion and Greta Johnsen, who will be discussing the series itself as well as the additional, wider history of House Targaryen.

The bulk of the interior shots in House of the Dragon were filmed at Warner Bros. Leavesden Studios out in Watford, England, a town just northwest of London.

For scenes that needed to be filmed on location, the show stretched far and wide to cover all of its bases, shooting in Cornwall, Surrey, and Derbyshire. A good portion of the filming in Cornwall took place at St. Michael's Mount, which is a massive castle on an island.

Outside of England, the series was filmed at a few spots in Spain as well as Portugal, like Trujillos and Cácere in Spain as well as Monsanto in Portugal.

Somehow, House of the Dragon had an even higher budget than that of Game of Thrones, with between $150 to $200 million spent on the upcoming series. This puts each episode at around $20 million for production, which is $14 million more than each episode of the first season of Game of Thrones and $5 million more per episode than the show's final season.
