26 of the Biggest Reveals from San Diego Comic-Con 2022

Instead of naming each of the next two phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phases five and six will be dubbed "The Multiverse Saga," and judging by the contents of the past few Marvel films, it's an apt title. The Multiverse Saga will kick off with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is set to premiere on February 17, 2023.

At SDCC, the official trailer was finally released for I Am Groot, an animated shorts series that follows our favorite Guardians of the Galaxy member, Groot. Comprised of five different shorts, I Am Groot will track our little tree buddy toddler as he grows up throughout the galaxy, making various encounters and little Porg-like friends along the way.

Okay, sure, it's not the same type of action we're normally used to seeing with Groot (apparently he has a thing for fashion?), but if anything, it's definitely going to be cute. Even though the first five shorts have yet to air yet, there's going to be a second installment of five more, which are already currently in development.

Having only been giving a teaser up to this point, like I Am Groot, SDCC handed us a brand new trailer for She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, a new series that's airing on Disney+ this August, featuring She-Hulk (Tatiana Maslany), who lives an even larger double life than Hannah Montana. Even after this trailer, people aren't completely sold on both the idea of this series as well as how it's visually being created, with tons of people already criticizing the special effects. Let's give this one some time, people!

Now, this one might just be the most-talked-about and hyped-up of all the releases we got from SDCC, and with good reason. Following the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, there was much speculation about just how the sequel to 2018's Black Panther would go on. As the trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was finally released, it's safe to say that this film is in the greatest of hands.

One of the biggest questions is who will be taking up the mantle of Black Panther now, with many speculating it will be his sister Shuri (Letitia Wright,) his friend Mbaku (Winston Duke,) or Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o.)

The film will also serve as the introduction of Atlantis in the MCU, with Namor the Submariner being a prominent character in the film. Tenoch Huerta will be portraying the sometimes hero, but also sometimes kind of bad guy Namor, who fights for Atlantis.

The third installment in Ant-Man's (Paul Rudd) journey will feature his old friend, the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), as they take on whatever in the world the "Quantumania" is, though it's clear it has something to do with the Multiverse. Okay, okay, we know that the Quantumania is the Quantum Realm, but still—what is it, really? With quite a lack of details about the film as a whole, much is still up in the air about what we're actually going to see come February of 2023.

Qunatummania will be the film debut of Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors,) who was already introduced in Loki. It seems as if, based on the titles of the upcoming Avengers films, he will be one of the big antagonists of the next few phases of Marvel movies, so his introduction here is pretty major.

It's been a while since a new Guardians of the Galaxy movie dropped: somehow, the last one aired in 2017. Sure, they've been featured in a number of films following Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Thor: Love and Thunder), but given that it's been about five years since their last feature film, it's safe to say that the squad will be coming back in a big way once 2023 rolls around. Oh, and Will Poulter will be making his first MCU appearance as Adam Warlock, the main villain of the film.

If you're an OG Marvel fan, you've definitely heard of Secret Invasion from the comics of the same name, but if you're new to the name, the series was a bunch of crossovers rolled into one. For this upcoming Disney+ series of the same name, they're bringing back Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) with the additions of characters portrayed by Cobie Smulders, Don Cheadle, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Olivia Colman.

Alaqua Cox will be reprising her role as Maya Lopez/Echo from 2021's Hawkeye for a show of her own—Echo—will pick up with the character directly after the timeline from Hawkeye. As her family was a large part of her character's arc in Hawkeye, it's going to take on an even bigger role in this series, which touches on her Native American family history, while also following her reign as the head of the Tracksuit Mafia.

Considered by many as one of the greatest—if not the greatest—of the Marvel original shows on Disney+, Loki is finally getting its second season sometime during the summer of 2023. Tom Hiddleston will be returning in his titular role of Loki, but not much else is known about the show aside from that. Given the way things ended in 2021, there are theories abound online about just which trajectory this series will follow.

You might be wondering, "Wait, wasn't there already an entire trilogy about Blade with Wesley Snipes?" and yes, you'd be correct. This 2023 reboot film will instead star Mahershala Ali as Blade, also known as Eric Cross Brooks, who made his first appearance in a quick, voice-only role in Eternals.

While the upcoming Ironheart series will mark Riri Williams/Ironheart's first solo debut, it won't be her first appearance in the MCU, however, as she's set to first appear in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which releases in November. Dominique Thorne will be taking on the role of Ironheart, a young woman who—inspired by the work of Tony Stark—creates her own robotic-mechanical suit to take on the world with.

The logo for this series alone brings back memories of the OG X-Men, harking back to their origins in 1963. X-Men '97 will feature mainstays like Wolverine, Jean Grey, Beast, Gambit, Rogue, Cyclops, Jubilee, and Storm. The 10-episode series will also be resuming the order of things, right from where the original X-Men animated series left off.

Kathryn Hahn will be throwing back on the old Agatha Harkness suit for a series of her own, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, which is set to begin streaming in the Winter of 2023. Following her appearances in WandaVision for this spinoff, the new series doesn't have many details ready to share just yet, but given the success of WandaVision, here's to hoping it'll be just as incredible.

We're finally getting a second season of Marvel's What If...?, a series based on the comics of the same name that explored alternate outcomes and set-ups for events that have occurred in Marvel comics. With such a high rating on Rotten Tomatoes (94%), it's obvious why the series is being given another season order, set to premiere just two years after its first season aired in 2021.

Daredevil hive, RISE!

Yep, we're back with more Daredevil after going about five years without a new season from the eponymous series on Netflix. This time around, the series will be airing on Disney+ sometime during the Spring of 2024 (I know), with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio reprising their roles of Daredevil and Kingpin, respectively.

As shown at the end of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson aka The Falcon had officially taken up the mantle as the new Captain America. He was given the shield by Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame but was still unsure of himself throughout the limited series.

Anthony Mackie will be returning as Sam Wilson in Captain America: New World Order, but who he will be fighting remains under wraps. New World Order drops in 2024.

The MCU's version of the Suicide Squad, the Thunderbolts is a team made up of anti-heroes and supervillains who sometimes work for good, and sometimes for bad.

While a cast has yet to be announced for Thunderbolts, it seems as if the MCU has been alluding to some team members throughout the past few movies and shows. Characters like John Walker aka US Agent, Yelena Belova, and others have met with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, who seems interested in creating a team of heroes herself, possibly out of villains or antiheroes.

Marvel's first family, the Fantastic Four, has appeared on the big screen three different times since 2005, none taking place in the MCU. However, they will finally be making their debut in 2024, which will kick off Phase 6 of this universe.

In Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, we got to see John Krasinski make a cameo appearance as Mr. Fantastic, which was the first time we've seen the character in the MCU. However, it's becoming more likely that this was just a fan service cameo rather than an actual casting for the future.

This film will likely be a major building block for the future of the MCU, and the buzz around it is huge.

Coming off the episode of What If?... that featured Marvel Zombies, we will be getting a full series based on the idea of a zombie apocalypse in the Marvel world. It'll be following up where we left off from the What If?... episode with many of the heroes we know and love either being dead or turned into zombies.

The show promises to have lots of blood and gore and will be Marvel's first TV-MA-rated television property.

The first of two Avengers movies dropping in 2025, The Kang Dynasty will be one of the culminations of the Kang the Conqueror story arc. With a name like Kang Dynasty, it certainly sounds like the villain will be emerging victorious at some point, similar to Thanos at the end of Infinity War.

As always, it will be up to the Avengers to stop the time-traveling supervillain and with his introduction coming in Quantummania, we'll get our first look at just how dangerous he is.

Secret Wars is the immediate follow-up to The Kang Dynasty, dropping about six months afterward. In the comics, Secret Wars is one of the biggest crossover events ever, with the Avengers, X-Men, Fantastic Four, and a variety of supervillains all taking part.

This will be one of the biggest events in the history of the MCU, likely resulting in a lot of major casualties and character deaths. While not confirmed, Marvel may choose to use this film as a soft reboot for the entire franchise.

Switching gears from Marvel, we got a new trailer for the anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead, a new series set in the Walking Dead universe. It will follow a variety of different characters who are attempting to survive the zombie apocalypse.

It has a pretty stellar cast that includes Olivia Munn, Anthony Edwards, Terry Crews, Jillian Bell, and more. We won't have to wait long for it, as the first episode drops on August 14th.

Another massive franchise that will see its start this year is The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Set thousands of years before the events of the films, The Rings of Power is set during Middle-Earth's Second Age.

In the series, we will see the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron, who was the villain of the film series. We will as the fall of the island kingdom of Númenor, the last alliance of elves and men, and finally, and perhaps most importantly, the forging of the Rings of Power.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premieres on September 2nd.

The DC Universe is a bit of a mess right now but we will be seeing Dwayne Johnson make his first appearance as a superhero in Black Adam arriving in October.

He will play the titular character, Black Adam, who was a villain but sometimes anti-hero in the comics. Based on the trailer, we will certainly see him engage in some villainy and will also fight some other heroes in the film like Hawkman, Atom Smasher, and Doctor Fate.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods is the follow-up to the surprisingly fun Shazam, with the superhero Shazam taking center stage. A more light-hearted take when compared to the other DC films, Shazam: Fury of the Gods sees the hero and the rest of his family fight the forces of evil.

They'll come into conflict with villains played by Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu, with the film dropping on December 21st.

One of the most highly anticipated series of the year, the Game of Thrones spin-off series House of the Dragon is set hundreds of years before the Game of Thrones. It will follow the storyline of the "Dance of Dragons," which is the civil war of the Targaryen dynasty, which is being fought over who will succeed the current king of Westeros.

Based on the novel Fire & Blood, it will also feature new stories and characters in the world of Westeros. Actors like Matt Smith, Paddy Considine, Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Steve Toussaint lead the cast. House of the Dragon has a lot riding on it, with many hoping that it will be better than the ending of Game of Thrones.
