Winter Has Come and Gone, Here are 25 Shows Like 'Game of Thrones' to Watch Right Now

Shadow Moon, played by Ricky Whittle, is a newly free ex-convict who meets a man named Mr. Wednesday who introduces him to a world he could have never dreamed of. He finds himself in the midst of a battle between the Old Gods and New Gods. That mythical element that’s similar to Game of Thrones is there, but if you liked that that show is faithful to source material from a series of books, you’ll like this too.

This is an especially great show to watch if you like Game of Thrones and you’ve read Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island novel because it’s a prequel to that. Set in the early 1700s, the show revolves around pirates, with a particular focus on Captain Flint. The show features some great battle scenes and action, good world-building, and even some of the raunchiness that helped made Game of Thrones popular.

Set in New Jersey in the 1920s, also known as the Prohibition era, this show is about a corrupt politician (played by the great Steve Buscemi) and his relationship with a wide range of groups, including gangsters and other corrupt government officials. The show really brings you to the early 20^th century with its characters and cinematography in a way that’s hard to describe unless you check it out for yourself.

Created by the Butterworth brothers, Britannia, as the name suggests, is set when the Romans invaded Britain, in 43 CE. Its time period is relatively close to Game of Thrones’, but that’s far from the only similarity here. Along with the historical narrative, there are magical elements interwoven, which sounds strange but is done really well. There are also smaller groups that don’t along with each other, like GoT’s Houses.

Fans of Game of Thrones might be able to appreciate Da Vinci’s Demons, an insight into the polymath’s early life, albeit a fictional one. The character is used in storylines like his attempt to acquire the Book of Leaves, a mystical text, and his confrontation with mythical beasts. The show really takes reality and stretches it in a way GoT fans might like.

The center of Frontier’s drama revolves around the fur trade in the 1700s, all the groups trying to take control of it and everything that comes along with it. Game of Thrones fans will appreciate the older setting, plus the appearance of Jason Mamoa as Declan Harp, a trapper who’s infamous for his lack of mercy.

A big part of Game of Thrones is its twists in plot and characters turning their backs on each other. If you’re a fan of that style, you have to try out House of Cards. It follows various politicians in Washington, D.C., and their plans to gain power. The GoT-style action sequences aren’t quite there, but what it lacks in outright action it makes up for in suspense.

This show covers the rise and fall of the Knights Templar through a fictional Templar leader named Landry du Lauzon and his quest to acquire the Holy Grail. The battle sequences here will definitely give you Game of Thrones vibes, but so will the political conflicts that happen internally, with the mythological stories of this era immersed.

A World War II nurse named Claire is taken back to Scotland in the mid-1800s mysteriously. She doesn’t know how it happened, but while she’s there, she falls in love with a Scottish warrior named Jamie, played by Sam Heughan. Some of the violence and edgier themes of Game of Thrones play a part here, but overall the show has a much more toned-down feel in many parts and it focuses more on romance too.

While this might surprise some as an entry on this list, not every show that’s like Game of Thrones has to be a period drama with greatly shot action scenes. Ozark does suspense like no other, with a constant tension about what could possibly happen next. It follows Marty Byrde, his family, and their money laundering for a Mexican drug cartel. Something that fans of Game of Thrones love is how any and every character could die at any moment and this show subscribes to the same notion.

Set in the aftermath of the first World War, Peaky Blinders follows a gang of the same name and their escapades with other rival crime families and gangs. The warring between these factions can feel like the battles between Houses in Game of Thrones. The large cast of characters, the way they interact and the political dynamics here will also give you GoT flashbacks.  

Rome aired from 2005 to 2007 and aired on HBO and BBC Two, making it one of the oldest shows on this list. It had a cult fan base that was vocal about it being canceled out in its first two seasons. Most feel that the show didn’t get the recognition it deserved and it was a little ahead of its time. Its greatness is much easier to recognize in the light of Game of Thrones. 

Now we go from one of the oldest shows on this list to one of the newest. At the time of writing, Shadow and Bone is just one season in, but the potential is insane. It follows Alina Starkov, an orphan who discovers she has a magical gift that allows her to manipulate the elements. A fun fact is that David J. Peterson, who developed Dothraki and Valyrian for Game of Thrones, created the language sometimes spoken in this show.

One of the best things about Game of Thrones is that the writers never pulled punches and the show was dark, gritty, and harsh in places, which made for some of its best moments. Another show that holds those same values is Sons of Anarchy. It’s a show about a motorcycle club that resides in a fictional town in Cali and deals with themes of loyalty, trust, and love, to name a few.

Spartacus doesn’t feature a bunch of fantasy elements, but what Game of Thrones-esque element you’re missing there will be made up for in its sheer violence, plot twists, and graphic sex scenes. Blood and Sand is the name of its first season and you’ll especially love that one.

The worst part about The Bastard Executioner is that it only ran for one season before getting canceled, which most think was premature. It is about a man in 14^th century Wales named Wilkin who becomes an executioner after his village is burnt down. He becomes ruthless in his quest to find out who killed his people.

If your favorite part of Game of Thrones happened to be the twisted family dynamics and how family members interacted with one another over time, you have to give The Borgias a try. It debuted in 2011 and is set in Renaissance-era Italy through the lens of a crime family called The Borgias. Religion, power, family, and more are tackled here.

Game of Thrones is set thousands of years in the past, but those who liked it might also enjoy The Expanse, which is set in the future where humans have managed to colonize the solar system. The show follows a few different groups of people including soldiers on Mars and politicians on Earth and eventually, a conspiracy regarding extra-terrestrial life is unveiled.

Bebbanburg was raised as a Viking after other Vikings invaded his home when he was young and the show is about that and the greater relationship between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons and Alfred The Great. Each season of the show covers a series of years, beginning with 866-878 AD in the first season. 

The Tudors is a show that’s largely about King Henry VIII, but more than just his marriages. It covers those but additionally tackles his reign as a whole, his struggle for power and politics around the time. It isn’t the most historically accurate piece of media, but if you’re a Game of Thrones fan looking for a new show, that’s probably not what you’re in need of anyway.

Based on Robert Jordan’s novel series of the same name, The Wheel of Time has no qualms about being inspired by Game of Thrones. Showrunner Rafe Judkins even visited the GoT set once to get some advice and inspiration and Michael McElhatton even makes an appearance. It’s about four young people, one of which is believed to be the reincarnation Dragon by a magical woman.

Set in the 15^th century, The White Queen is the tale of multiple women’s quest for the throne of England. It’s only a ten-episode miniseries, but will have you glued to your screen even more so.

Some gamers out there might already be familiar with this one due to the insane popularity of the series, especially The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. The show is based off of the book series by Andrzej Sapkowski and features Henry Cavill, known for his Superman portrayal, as Geralt of Rivia. The show deals with magic and monsters and comparisons to Game of Thrones were drawn early on, though it sets itself apart enough too.

Ragnar Lothbrok is a Viking farmer who ends up as the king of Denmark. The show does a great job of making you feel one way about characters and then switching that up entirely within a season, the kind of twists that Game of Thrones fans will be able to appreciate. It originally started out as a miniseries but after the outpouring of support, went on for multiple seasons.

Last but not least, Westworld. It’s set in a Wild West-themed amusement park that’s run completely by human-like robots. The dilemma comes in how the robots are treated. The show will drag you in and reward you for remaining invested. Its dozens of Emmy nominations should speak for themselves.
