Forty-five-year-old actor and red carpet maverick Mahershala Ali took home an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Green Book. He showed up in a super swaggy look, perhaps topping our list of the best Ali looks of all time. As early as 2013, Ali really started dressin’, straddling the line between streetwear and suiting. He debuts trends on the red carpet like velvet suits, loose silhouettes, tuxedos and, most notably, ear-bearing beanies.
Tonight, the award winner participated in the art of “helixing,” a hipster trend that means not covering your ears with a beanie hat but rather leaving them exposed out in the cold. This particular hat, though, is truly a work of craftsmanship. Made of velour felt, milliner Gigi Burris offers this hat, called the Sharina,in three sizes and three colors.
Rather than a knitted beanie, it’s really a structured topper: More newsboy than street slicker, more hipster than hobo. This look receives a solid five out of five on the swag-o-meter.
