Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a Celebration of Afrofuturism, Life and Love

If you know me, then you know it’s rare for me to say that a movie was perfect ten out of ten. My friends, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a perfect film worth every single penny spent at the theater. It is a must see right now. Not two weeks from now, not a month from now, and certainly not when it’s on streaming. Right. Now. If you’ve been following our style series, then you already know that there are no spoilers because we only talk about the style and costumes behind movies and television.

RELATED: How Costuming and Style Helped to Make Chadwick Boseman the Black Panther

Our review of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is no different. This film was one of many different stories, and the costumes played a part in telling each individual component of the movie. While we won’t say too much, we will say that this sequel was international, going from Wakanda all the way to Switzerland, Haiti, the Atlantic Ocean, and plenty more in between. Here’s our style review.

The Color White

Obviously this film beautifully acknowledges the life and legacy of the late great Chadwick Boseman. While here in the U.S. we tend to wear the color black for funerals, in Africa, red and white are the common colors for memorial services. White was the designated color choice for Wakanda Forever, and the costumes were simply elegant. It was only right that everyone look regal for this memorial because Chadwick was a regal Black Panther.

Wakandan Fashion

Once again, the amazing costumes in this film were created by the wonderful Ruth Carter. The themes of Wakandan Fashion are an expansion of what was previously created in the first film. In a 2018 interview with Tanisha C. Ford of The Atlantic, Carter stated that her vision for Wakandan style drew from contemporary and traditional African fashion, creating the costumes with rich color palettes along with hand-dyeing and beading techniques to reflect tribal fashion.

The same is true for Wakanda Forever, with Carter emphasizing the high tech afrofuturistic element even more, complete with state of the art fabrics, jewelry, crowns, and body art. There were even a couple of sheath dresses in the mix.

Namor’s People

You’ll find out exactly who Namor and his people are when you watch the movie, but despite being the antagonists, they are beautiful. Namor’s people are blue-skinned Talokans who wear traditional Mesoamerican garments, some of which are also made specifically for the water because they are water-breathing people. There are a few elements of Aztec fashion that are similar to African style such as the bodypaint, jewelry, and cloaks for example.

Campus Fashion

This time around there was a brief stop on the campus of MIT where a student scientist by the name of Riri Williams was introduced, and the fashion here was similar to just about any college campus. Hoodies, joggers, jeans, minidresses, and plenty of other casual/athletic clothing worn amongst university students.

The Scenery

The scenery is among some of the most beautiful we’ve seen yet. We already know Wakanda is beautiful from the first film, but the underwater living places of the Talokans are just simply stunning with caves, glowworms, and more. And let’s not even get into the snowy mountainous regions depicted as well.

We’re already starting to give too much away, so make sure you get your butts in the theater this weekend and check out Wakanda Forever. In the meantime if you are looking for some Black Panther merchandise to cop, we have a couple of suggestions.
