Quarterbacks such as Andrew Luck, Cam Newton, Justin Herbert, and most recently C.J Stroud, have been notable in this regard, showcasing their skill and adaptability to the NFL game early in their careers and establishing themselves as some of the players with the most passing yards by a rookie. However, early success doesn't always mean that the player will eventually land on our list of best NFL players of all-time, and early struggles certainly don't mean that they won't. Here is a breakdown of the rookie NFL passing yards record.

7. Carson Wentz: 3,782 Passing Yards

While Nick Foles may be remembered as the quarterback who led the Eagles to their 2018 Super Bowl championship, it was Carson Wentz who helped guide them through the regular season. Wentz had a fantastic rookie year, throwing for over 3,700 yards. It looked as though he was on his way to an MVP award in 2018 before being sidelined with a season ending injury. We haven't seen Wentz return to this form, but you could still see flashes of what could have been a hall of fame quarterback.

When the New England Patriots moved on from Tom Brady, the immediate question that came to the forefront was who would replace the GOAT? The Patriots were quick to act, selecting Mac Jones in the 2021 NFL Draft. He had an immediate impact on the Patriots in his rookie season.

Jones was exceptional in the pocket, gaining nearly 4,000 passing yards in the air. His play helped lead the Patriots to a 10-7 record, good enough to secure a Wild Card in the competitive AFC. They ultimately lost to the Bills, and he's been struggling ever since, losing his grip on the starting job this season. The Patriots seem as though they'll be moving on from him in 2024.

5. Jameis Winston: 4,042 Passing Yards

Year: 2015

Jameis Winston was selected as the first overall pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he played all 16 games as the starting quarterback.

During his rookie campaign, Winston threw for 4,042 passing yards. His performance set a new rookie record for passing yards in a season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at that time. It's worth noting that Winston's rookie season was statistically productive, but he also faced the typical learning curve and challenges that many first-year quarterbacks experience in the NFL.

4. Cam Newton: 4,051 Passing Yards

Going into the 2023 NFL Draft, all eyes were on Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, who went first overall that night. Going second overall to the Houston Texans was C.J. Stroud out of Ohio State. He'd go on to decimate any expectation laid out for him in his rookie year, taking what looked like a rebuilding team to the playoffs, while throwing for over 4,000 yards. Although the NFL now plays 17 regular season games (as opposed to the 16 they used to play), Stroud accomplished this incredible feat in only 15 games! If one thing is for sure about the 2023 draft class, it's that the Texans did not make a mistake in taking Stroud.

2. Justin Herbert: 4,336 Passing Yards

Year: 2020

Justin Herbert had an outstanding rookie season with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2020. He took over as the starting quarterback in Week 2 and had a record-setting performance. For his rookie season, Herbert threw for 4,336 passing yards, setting a new NFL rookie record for the most passing yards per game (289.1) in a single season. He easily would have been #1 on this list if he played the full 16 games. This accomplishment earned him the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, highlighting his impressive debut in the league.
