Hey everyone! It's The Wrestling Classic here with another list for ONE37pm. It's that time of the year when everyone shares their favorite matches of the year as the year comes to a close. It’s always a difficult task but it’s always good to have a catalog of matches that fans can look back on years from now so here we are. I'm sure you'll come back to this list of the best wrestling matches of 2023 as a nice time capsule in the far-flung future. This was a year full of great matches from across the wrestling world. There have been so many great matches this year that it would be impossible to narrow it down to twenty matches without missing a few. I don’t even think the honorable mention will do this year justice. I say this often but this generation is SPOILED with great wrestling that it’s hard to remember every awesome match. I tried to make sure this list was a good combination of great in-ring action and matches that were just truly memorable.

20. CM Punk (c) vs. Samoa Joe
AEW All In - 08/27/23 ("Real World Championship")
There were over 70,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in the United Kingdom for 2023's monumental edition of AEW All In. This event would be AEW's biggest event to date and the match to kick it off ended up being a hell of a barnburner. Little did we know it would be CM Punk’s final match in All Elite Wrestling. It was fitting that it was against Samoa Joe. The card for this show was stacked but for some reason, the match that opened the show ended up being recognized by many as the most memorable one. It was just a straightforward old-school wrestling match. Punk even won his last AEW match with his rarely-seen Pepsi Plunge finisher. This bout was a nice ode to Punk's non-WWE career before returning to the WWE in November.
19. Becky Lynch vs. Trish Stratus

18. Bad Bunny vs. Damian Priest

16. Gunther (c) vs. Chad Gable
WWE Raw - 09/04/23 (WWE Intercontinental Championship)
15. MJF (c) vs. Darby Allin vs. Sammy Guevara vs. Jungle Boy
AEW Double or Nothing - 05/28/23 (Four-Way Match for the AEW World Championship)
All Elite Wrestling and Tony Khan have christened MJF, Jungle Boy, Darby Allin, and Sammy Guevara as the "Four Pillars" of the company from very early on. It’s a phrase borrowed from Japanese wrestling where four of a company's young stars are considered the future of their respective company. During MJF’s first run as AEW World Champion, there was an angle where he ended up facing the other three pillars all at the same time with his championship up for grabs. MJF and Darby had both reached a certain level of popularity and gained a ton of respect from the AEW fanbase while Guevara and Jungle Boy went out there with something to prove to gain those same accolades from the fans. This was a fun multi-man encounter where everyone got their time to shine. It had a perfect balance of athletic competition and MJF's signature brand of entertainment. There were a ton of callbacks to previous feuds between all four men here. I feel like this match deserves more love than it currently gets.
14. Roman Reigns (c) vs. Cody Rhodes
WWE WrestleMania 39: Night Two - 04/02/23 (Undisputed WWE Universal Championship)
13. MJF (c) vs. Kenny Omega
AEW Collision - 10/28/23 (AEW World Championship)
12. The Usos (c) vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn
WWE WrestleMania 39: Night One - 04/01/23 (WWE Undisputed Tag Team Championship)
11. Bryan Danielson vs. Ricky Starks
AEW All Out - 09/03/23 (Strap Match)
Punk and Ricky Starks were in the midst of a hot feud when Punk was let go by AEW with cause, leaving the planned Strap Match between the two at All Out subject to change. On the episode of AEW Collision just a day before the PPV event took place, Bryan Danielson stepped up to replace Punk in this match to defend the honor of Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat. This encounter was a violent and bloody affair which once again showcased just how much of a GOAT Danielson is. It also showed just how good Starks is when given such a massive opportunity to work against an in-ring great. What's crazy is is Bryan was working this match with an arm that wasn’t even fully healed yet! The praiseworthy tenacity of both men was put on full display here, which is why I have to give it a nod as one of the best wrestling matches of 2023.
10. FTR (c) vs. Bullet Club Gold
AEW Collision - 07/15/23 (Two Out of Three Falls Match for the AEW World Tag Team Championship)
9. The Usos vs. Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa
WWE Money in the Bank - 07/01/23 (Bloodline Civil War)
8. Will Ospreay vs. “Speedball” Mike Bailey
Impact Wrestling Bound For Glory - 10/21/23
7. Bryan Danielson vs. Zack Sabre Jr.
AEW WrestleDream - 10/01/23
Danielson versus Zack Sabre Jr. was like two passionate artists that love professional wrestling showing us how great it can be when produced in its simplest form. There were no bells and whistles here, folks - these two men showcased wrestling stripped down to the basics, which is a compliment unto itself. This was a dream match we got robbed of a year earlier at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door when Bryan got injured. Everyone knew that whenever it finally did take place, it would be awesome. Every move, transition, and spot had a purpose here - the main story thread going throughout this match was all about wearing down one's opponent by targeting specific body parts to weaken their opponent long enough to earn the victory. It was a really good technical wrestling match contested between two top-of-the-line in-ring technicians.
6. Charlotte Flair (c) vs. Rhea Ripley
WWE WrestleMania 39: Night One - 04/01/23 (WWE SmackDown Women's Championship)
5. Swerve Strickland vs. "Hangman" Adam Page
AEW Full Gear - 11/18/23 (Texas Death Match)
The rivalry between Swerve Strickland and "Hangman" Adam Page had gotten extra personal once Swerve broke into Page’s house. That highly disrespectful moment led them to hash out their hate for each other during an intense Texas Death Match at AEW Full Gear. AEW has given us Texas Death Matches before, but this one just went above and beyond the level of brutality produced by those previous matchups. I was live in attendance for this one and can tell you the fans in attendance cringed in horror when Page proceeded to drink Swerve's blood! It was something we hadn’t seen before and a sight many of us will never forget. It felt like these two wanted to inflict as much pain as they could to the other. This rivalry led to a resurgence for Page and a coming-out party for Swerve as a top star in the company. This was the ultimate blowoff match to one of the best AEW feuds of 2023.
4. MJF (c) vs. Bryan Danielson
AEW Revolution - 03/05/23 (Iron Man Match for the AEW World Championship)
Bryan Danielson is arguably one of the greatest wrestlers of the modern era who is regularly praised for his immaculate in-ring talent and abilities. On the flip side, MJF has always been praised for his gift of gab and ability to keep fans invested via an engrossing promo on the microphone. Every time the fans get to see MJF wrestle, he’s shown that he can hang with some of the best - the real test for everyone's favorite scumbag came when Bryan challenged him to a 60-minute Iron Man Match for the AEW World Championship. This was an outstanding match that went 65 minutes due to it going into sudden death overtime at a 3-3 tie. Both guys were evenly matched throughout the match and it was an incredible performance for both guys. This match validated MJF as not just a great talker but also an equally worthwhile talent as an in-ring performer.
3. Will Ospreay (c) vs. Kenny Omega
NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 - 01/04/23 (IWGP United States Championship)
2023 was the year of Ospreay! It started with a bang at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 when he finally got his long-awaited match with Kenny Omega. Ospreay had been taunting Omega for months and labeled him as the man who abandoned New Japan and left guys like himself to pick up the pieces in his absence. That strong level of buildup resulted in Omega challenging Ospreay to this match for his prized IWGP United States Championship. Omega came into this match wanting to destroy the arrogant Ospreay who kept dragging his name in the mud, whereas Ospreay wanted to prove he was the new "Gaijin" king of New Japan. This was a hard-hitting match that saw both men's styles perfectly complement each other. One of the coolest things about this bout is how it features a lot of cool nods to Omega’s storied history in New Japan. This was one of Ospreay’s best matches of all time even though he fell in defeat. It also reminded me that Omega just has a different aura in Japan than he does in North America.
2. Gunther (c) vs. Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre
WWE WrestleMania 39: Night Two - 04/02/23 (Triple Threat Match for the WWE Intercontinental Championship)
1. Kenny Omega (c) vs. Will Ospreay
AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door - 06/25/23 (IWGP United States Championship)
This was the highly anticipated Wrestle Kingdom rematch between Kenny Omega and Will Ospreay. It took place in Toronto, Canada at Forbidden Door, which is AEW’s annual collaboration show with NJPW. The goal of this second meeting was to one-up their previous bout in front of a Western crowd, which I think they easily accomplished. It was almost like we got New Japan Kenny Omega in the United States (especially because Omega used his old theme music from that Hall of Fame era of his career!). Ospreay taunted the Canadian fans by disrespecting the flag in a Shawn Michaels fashion, only for Omega to defend his country by retaliating in kind. The chemistry between both men was off the charts here once again - the blood added to the physicality of it all! They even made us believe that Omega was invincible as he overcame the Don Callis interference and kicked out at one near the end of the match. At the end of this match, Ospreay won back his championship and redeemed himself with a massive victory over Omega. People were still talking about this match weeks and months later, making it the best wrestling match of 2023 by a country mile.
I hope you all enjoyed this list of the best wrestling matches of 2023! Let me know if I missed any matches you think should have made this list but didn't.
