20 Shows Like 'Euphoria' To Watch Now

13 Reasons Why is a show based mostly around high school students and it delves into many of the same topics as Euphoria, including but not limited to drug abuse, sexism and bullying. Across its four seasons, the show arguably gets a little unbelievable and feels morally bankrupt at some points, but for some of the earlier seasons, it’s great for giving you the same feeling that Euphoria does.

When Kate Wallis is found and rescued months after being kidnapped, she says that Jeanette found her while she was captive and didn’t help her escape. Jeanette has been dreaming of becoming popular, but this isn’t what she expected. The drama and thrill that follows is great and involves flash-forwards and flashbacks, the latter of which fans of Euphoria will be quite familiar with.

Dare Me begins with Beth, who is and has always been Top Girl in the cheerleader squad. Unfortunately, teenage drama is ever-present and not only does Beth’s best friend Addy want what she has, but the new cheerleading coach threatens Beth’s position. The show eventually gets darker and grittier than that, with a murder mystery, abusive sexual relationships and mental health issues at the centre of it.

Right when Euphoria premiered, comparisons to Degrassi were made by many. The show, especially The Next Generation which ran from 2001 to 2015, dealt with many of the same ‘taboo’ topics as Euphoria and arguably laid out the path for Euphoria to shine today. If Euphoria has seen further than Degrassi: The Next Generation, it’s because it stands on its shoulders.

Elite follows three working-class friends who make it to a private school where many of the elite’s kids go. But of course, from there, it isn’t all rosy. Some kids have too much money, some too little. One of the students is eventually killed and when every kid becomes a suspect, this dynamic makes things very interesting to watch. Keep in mind that this is a Spanish show that English speakers will need subtitles to follow.

Freaks and Geeks is mostly talked about today for helping launch the careers of Seth Rogen, James Franco and Jason Segel. It lasted just one season, but was popular enough and had a cult-like fan base to where it still gets love today. The show definitely has a lighter tone than Euphoria with much more of a focus on the comedic aspect, but parts of it will give you the same feeling as Euphoria too.

Friday Night Lights, as the name suggests, follows a football team in the fictional town of Dillon in West Texas. The town is so small that the football team essentially defines it. One thing that this show does just as well as Euphoria is making the high school experience feel incredibly suffocating and competitive, as it is for many. A young Michael B. Jordan stars here.

While Genera+ion doesn’t necessarily have the same edge as Euphoria, like Euphoria, the themes that it touches on are tough to tackle but it does so quite well. It’s also set in a high school, which is instrumental to the entire feel of the show. Despite what goes on each episode, there is an innocence and even naivety to many of the characters that doesn’t appear so much in Euphoria.

Gossip Girl had somewhat of a reputation for being a little edgy when it originally aired in 2007, but times have changed since then. The show did get revamped last year but didn’t hold up to the original, but that doesn’t mean that the entire thing isn’t worth a watch if you’re into Euphoria. The show’s focus is some schoolgirls who have their lives reported on by a secret blogger.

For this show, Grand Army High School in Brooklyn is the focus. The show is raw right from the opening scene and only picks up momentum with its realness. Just a few topics covered here are rape culture, sexuality, and racism, and all of these are done with an air of reverence, but through a real lens too. The catalyst for the show is a bomb going off at the school.

My So-Called Life doesn’t get the respect it deserves for being so influential amongst teen series. It was pivotal for the genre and whether they know it or not, many shows today use the blueprint that this show outlined. It follows Angela Chase, a fifteen-year-old high school girl going through many of the cliché struggles of someone that age. Importantly, Wilson Cruz who plays Enrique is credited with being the first openly gay actor to play an openly gay teen on television.

Sex Education is a British show which does get raunchy at times but admittedly isn’t as gloomy as Euphoria. What it does do like Euphoria though, is showcase larger-than-life personalities and put a lens on how they all interact with each other. Otis’ mother is a sexologist and when his friends at Moordale Secondary School find out, he tries to acquire as much knowledge from her as possible to seem cool.

This show is based on Gillian Flynn’s novel of the same name. It follows the life of Camille Preaker, a reporter. When she’s sent back to her hometown to report on the murders of two teenage girls, she gets frighteningly close to the case and some old things start coming back up. This is a great drama with twists throughout.

It must be said that we’re recommending the UK version of this show because the U.S. version fell a little flat. Skins was giving people an unfiltered look at teenage life before it was cool and you could argue that it helped remove a bit of a stigma too. A little like Euphoria, Skins focuses on one character per episode, which really builds things up well.

While the exact synopsis of this show doesn’t sound like something Euphoria fans might like on paper, what’s really key here is that the turbulent relationship between the two main characters is a little like Rue and Jules’ complex dynamic. The End of the F***ing World follows James, who plans to murder Alyssa, his romantic partner who loves him.

The Sex Lives of College Girls is a teen comedy-drama created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble which is currently just one season long with a second on the way. The common theme with series on this list is that they’re not necessarily as dark to the core as Euphoria, but have similar elements with a lighter tone. This fits right in.

The Society is a mystery teen drama that follows a group of adolescents who are now in charge of running the town after the rest of the population has disappeared. To make things stranger, a forest now surrounds the town, and connection with the outside world is completely non-existent.

Like many shows on this list, We Are Who We Are is a coming-of-age story for a bunch of kids but the twist here is that the show has an artsy lens over it and is a little more poetic in its storytelling, sort of romanticizing the topics a little bit. It’s a unique take on the genre. The show is set during the 2016 U.S. Presidential elections.

Yellowjackets is one of the newer shows on this list, premiering in November of 2021. It’s set in 1996 though, when a plane carrying a team of New Jersey high school soccer players crashes, leaving the survivors to fight for their lives for nineteen months. There are also moments showing them in current times, making for an interesting dynamic.

Last but most certainly not least, You is a show about Joe Goldberg, who is essentially a psychopath with a front as a loving guy. He pursues women creepily, researching anything about them he can and there’s not much he won’t do to get what he wants. The show has somewhat of a similar vibe to Euphoria and is actually narrated too.
