25 of the Best Old MTV Shows You Probably Forgot About

Before The Kardashians, there was...The Ashley Simpson Show, which followed Ashlee as she was in the process of recording her first album. The whole point of the series was to get to know Ashley outside of being "Jessica Simpsons' little sister," and while the show didn't last very long, it did accomplish that mission.

A lot of people may not know this, but from 1981 to 1987, every Saturday night MTV would air a concert as a part of their Saturday Night Concert series. Can we bring this back MTV? Even if it's just re-airing old concerts?

Aka Headbangers Ball, this was the show for the heavy metal lovers only. You got heavy metal music, heavy metal performances, and interviews from the bands behind the heavy metal sound. You might have had tinnitus after watching, but the tinnitus was worth it damn it!

Do you guys remember when the contestants used to get Nexted before they could barely step off the bus? That was funny as hell. The mid-2000s will always remain the peak of reality tv in our book.

120 minutes was a full two-hour program that was dedicated exclusively to alternative artists. It would be nice if something like that could make a comeback because there's loads of talented alternative artists who deserve to have the spotlight put on them.

Back in the day, artists would drop their new music at the club. If it went over well, then you had a hit on your hands. If it didn't, well, you probably didn't have a hit on your hands. Club MTV was a show that caught the action in real time as it took place at The Palladium in New York City, which is the place where teens and young adults would hang out, party, and groove to the music all night long. The show spanned five seasons on the channel.

If you didn't automatically know this show was associated with Snoop Dogg just based on the name alone, then we don't know what to tell you.

Depending on who you talk to, Yo! MTV Raps is either an MTV show that you remember in full force, or one that you've forgotten about completely. The difference probably lies between whether or or not you were born in the 1980s or before (therefore making you around to watch it live), or whether you were born in the 1990s (therefore probably not making you old enough to remember/not born when it aired).

Long before TRL aka Total Request Live, there was MTV's All Request where you could watch your favorite music videos. The show didn't last very long, but eventually they would nail down a formula that worked (hence TRL).

Beach MTV seemed like it was a major vibe. Can we get this one back too MTV?

MTV's Most Wanted didn't air on the regular MTV channel, but it's still worth mentioning because it lasted five years, and was full of gems. The show aired on MTV Europe, and featured viewer interaction, competitions, live music performances, and music videos.

Alternative Nation. Another MTV program that was devoted solely to alternative artists and their music. Gotta love it.

Oh you didn't know that MTV had a show that was dedicated entirely to style now did you? The series premiered in 1989, and coincided with the rise of the "supermodel" era focusing on topics such as fashion, the lives of supermodels, and even tough subjects such as eating disorders. Yup. This was a thing.

Want to know what else vintage MTV had? MTV Sports, which ran from 1992 to 1997, and was a reality sports show that featured radical sports from around the country.

The Grind was the official replacement for Club MTV, except the club setting was changed to a studio one. Not the same as an actual club in our opinion, but still very much a fun show from the clips we've seen.

Daily Dose was the place where you went for your daily dose of music. You also got some cool interviews and behind the scenes stuff from some of your favorite artists, which you can see in the video above.

Nothing was sugarcoated on 12 Angry Viewers. People let you know exactly how they felt about a song/video, and didn't hold back anything. A show like this probably wouldn't go over very well today, and to be honest, it didn't go over very well in 1997 either which is why it lasted only a year. The clips that are available over the internet are kind of funny though.

The story goes a little something like this—MTV created two programs in the latter half of the 90s—Total Request and MTV Live. Neither one were performing particularly well on their own, so the decision was made to merge the two together. Thus TRL was born—a live music video countdown show. It cool seeing Total Request in its early stages prior to the merge—almost like you're watching a piece of rare history.

Some of you remember Making the Video, and some of you don't. For those that don't, Making the Video captured the entire filming of an artist's music video from start to finish. If a video shoot was three days, MTV was there the entire three days, and oftentimes the making of the video segment/show was concluded with the premiere of the music video at the end. BET also had their own version of this called Access Granted, and it was interesting to see which channel wound up getting the artist/music video, but that's a different topic for a different day.

Another show meant for the rockers and rock heads. Wish this one had lasted longer as well.

If you didn't catch your favorite artists while they were on TRL, you could always see if they were gonna pull up to Direct Effect. At times Direct Effect was even more lit than TRL, but we digress.

The good ole days when we got an actual mini-documentary from artists about their upcoming albums. In hindsight, this should have lasted longer as well.

BIOrhythm was a documentary series on MTV that chronicled an artist's early years and rise to fame. We were able to find the one done on Britney Spears, which you can see in the video above.

And All Eye On, yet another place where you got to see artist's breaking down the respective eras they were in at that specific point in time. Like we said before, gotta love vintage MTV.
