Checking In With Grip

Laid back with a cool vibe, Grip is an artist that you definitely need to keep an eye on. Since his break-out mixtape Porch, Grip has continued to build his fan base over these last few years. Extremely relatable, Grip is just like you and I in some ways (except the majority of us don’t have great rapping abilities). With his latest release, PROBOSCIDEA, gaining traction, Grip ‘checked in’ with ONE37pm’s Mike Boyd about all things music.

Mike Boyd: You just dropped a project right?

Grip: Yeah PROBOSCIDEA! You mess with basketball right? So to me, those are literally pick up games. I didn’t put much effort into it as far as lyrics and stuff. Didn’t try to promote it. It was just for people who wanted to hear a rap record.

Boyd: I really like the song ‘Tell It.’ Could you tell us the inspiration behind that?

Grip: Pretty much just kinda like your path and my path in the industry so far. Just going from somebody who was totally overlooked. Not always having that confidence in yourself, but knowing that you have to keep on going. Also kind of giving word to the ones that are coming up after us who might need that little push or advice but letting them know that there’s sharks out there.

Boyd: The production was crazy too!

Grip: Yeah that was all Tu. We just wanted to do samples and just an ode to soul chops and that classic Hip-Hop feeling.

Boyd: What’s your favorite lyric on that song?

Grip: It’s a sequence. The beginning of the second verse— Only got a couple of friends, I’ve seen too much to pretend something with them, that will toughen your skin, holes in your shirt when it wasn’t a trend. That whole verse!

Boyd: What is your take on Atlanta?

Grip: Atlanta is booming right now. It’s crazy! We have so much untapped potential that people are not tapping into right now. I like the lyrical class right now and mainstream rap. It’s dope. I hope that eventually we can gain camaraderie. That’s why I go to LA because it’s not all about clout. So hopefully we can gain that.
