Karl-Anthony Towns is a man that needs no introduction. Instead, we’ll call what we’re about to do here a “refresh.” Let us give you a quick rundown of what all the 28-year-old has accomplished so far. First overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Four All Star selections (more on that in a few), winner of the 2021- 2022 NBA 3-Point Contest, and, just the other day, becoming the fourth player in NBA history to record 50 or more points in the All Star Game. And that’s not all! Towns also became the first player to record 30 or more points in one quarter during an All Star Game, which gave him an absurd statline of 50 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists in just 28 minutes. When KAT—a family guy that loves to kick it with his loved ones and a style head that likes mixing and matching with his entrepreneur fashionista girlfriend Jordyn Woods (though he admits he can do a little bit better in this department)—isn't balling, he's all about giving back and helping the kids.

I’m a vibe-maker, and I just want to dress how I’m feeling, and how I want to make the party, meeting, and atmosphere to be—I want my outfits to reflect the energy I’m bringing for that night.

“It’s just about having fun,” Towns tells ONE37pm from Indianapolis during an interview right in the heart of his fourth All Star Appearance. “I don’t want to take any moment for granted. To be here, have my family here, and my niece and nephew who are getting older and now able to understand the gravity of this moment—they make it a brand new experience every time.”

One aspect of the weekend KAT was excited about was all the activations being put on by STARRY, now the official soft drink of the NBA and the sponsor of the 3-Point Contest. “It was really fun to be able to do that commercial with STARRY and the 3-Point Contest is my favorite event to participate in,” Towns says.

Often regarded as one of the NBA’s most stylish players, Towns pops onto Zoom for our interview in a sleek jacket paired with a white tee and a silver chain. If you’re familiar with KAT’s style, then you already know there are times when he keeps it simple, and others when he shows up and shows out a little bit. I ask Towns how he approaches his style on a day-to-day basis. “I just create vibes,” he answers. “I’m a vibe-maker, and I just want to dress how I’m feeling, and how I want to make the party, meeting, and atmosphere to be—I want my outfits to reflect the energy I’m bringing for that night.”

As for the brands he’s feeling at the moment? “Shoutout to my girl Jordyn—I just wore her Woods by Jordyn hoodie last game.”

My father taught me the game of basketball. Without him, I wouldn’t know or love this game.

Of course, Towns' girlfriend Woods is a fashion designer that just launched her brand this past January. A quick look at their photos together shows you they’re a couple that perfectly matches each other’s fly, so I ask Towns if they make it a point to coordinate their outfits. “Not as much as she would like,” Towns laughs. “She for sure makes it an effort to color coordinate… I love it! I love when we get the chance to have our own little Paris Fashion Week moment. Whether it’s in L.A. or Milwaukee—we’re gonna make it happen!”

The star big man names Bottega Veneta, Fear of God and NAHMIAS as some of his other favorite brands. “It doesn’t matter what the brand is really as long as it matches the overall vibe I’m going for.”

Since fashion and inspiration go hand-in-hand, I ask KAT who some of his biggest inspirations were growing up as a whole, and how it’s shaped him in both life and basketball. “My father taught me the game of basketball,” he reflects. “Without him, I wouldn’t know or love this game. I’ve also always been a big fan of Magic Johnson—I wear the number 32 because of him. He’s a big part of why I play the way I play and how he always made his teammates better. I looked up to Magic for basketball, and my dad for life. As far as my game goes: I would describe my game as being versatile, efficient, and effective. Those are my words, but I’ll let the fans make their call!”

On a whim, I decide to ask Towns what a day in the life looks like for him, and to my surprise he says it’s a question he’s never been asked in the nearly 10 years he’s been in the NBA. “I would say it starts with an early wake up," he begins. "I get some green tea and drive to work. Then it’s all about development, recovery and massages. By the time I leave it’s about 5:30 in the evening, and I go home, play some video games, talk to my friends and family on the phone, eat dinner, and watch some tape to get ready for the next day.”

With it being All Star Weekend, KAT is a man on the run, but he leaves us with one final message for the kids:

“Believe in yourself, but also have belief in the process you need to do," Towns says. "Nobody is going to know more of what you need than yourself, and you’ve got to have those honest conversations with yourself. Back in the day they didn’t believe in the game I wanted to play. Now they say I’ve changed the look of big men by shooting, passing, and being on the perimeter. They told me and my pops it was a waste of time. So believe in yourself, the dreams you have, and the way you want to change and impact the game—and not just in basketball either. You can be impacting the game as a woman, hairdresser, stylist, a President, Vice President—just trust in yourself and the process you know you need to get there.”
